Resumen

The isopropanol decomposition is used as a model reaction for determining the acid or basic characteristics of zeolites, specially zeolites of the type Y due to the facility of decomposition in both sites. The acid sites produce water and propene, while the basic sites produce acetone and hydrogen. Zeolites exchanged with alkaline earth may carry out both sites due to their bivalent charges. In this research paper two types of zeolites (A and Y) underwent ion exchange according to an experimental design with the following parameters: cation introduction (Ca+2 or Ba+2) and exchanging time (5 minutes or 24 hours). The zeolites obtained were characterized by X-ray fluorescence, superficial area, and acidity/basicidity by the model reaction of isopropanol decomposition. It was verified that ion exchange modified acidity/basicidity in zeolites.
