Adsorption of Methylene Blue Using Chitosan as Adsorbent

Mohamad Akil Mohd Marzuki

Resumen

A series of chitosan synthesized from shrimp shell waste and used as adsorbents for the study of the effect of parameters studies such as different initial concentration of methylene blue solution, different adsorbent dosages and different temperature on the removal of methylene blue (MB). Structural and morphological characterization of chitosan were performed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The results from the parameters studies showed that the adsorption capacity for methylene blue decreased with increasing initial dye concentration, but increased with different adsorbent dosages used. However, different temperature on adsorption of methylene blue showed an increased for the first three temperature which were 30°C, 35°C, and 40°C and decreased from temperature of 45°C and 50°C. The adsorption kinetics of MB onto the chitosan obeyed Langmuir isotherm (R2 = 0.9894).
