Resumen
Propolis is a natural product dispensed in pharmacies and natural product warehouses. Its properties have long been acknowledged in traditional medicine, yet presently there is no monographic standard. The propolis properties most cited in the literature are its anti-infl ammatory, antioxidant, and antiseptic properties, as well as its ability to act as an antineoplastic agent. In this paper, the pharmacologic and analytical data for propolis are reviewed, with the aim of providing a standardization technique that allows the production of effective and safe propolis products. El propóleos es un producto apícola resinoso y complejo, con una variable apariencia física, recogido y transformado por las abejas melíferas ( Apis mellifera ) a desde la vegetación que visitan. Se distribuye en farmacias y almacenes naturistas, y en la actualidad carece de un estándar de calidad. Las propiedades biológicas y farmacológicas más estudiadas son aquellas que lo describen como agente antiinfl amatorio, antioxidante, antiséptico y antineoplásico. En este trabajo se revisa la información farmacológica y analítica tendiente a una estandarización que permita producir medicamentos de efi cacia y seguridad terapéutica comprobable.
