Adolescent Sexual Reproductive Health (ASRH) Education: Perspectives of Muslims in South Asia and Middle East Countries

     

Resumen

The present paper made an attempt to explore the perceptions of Muslims in South Asia and Middle Eastern countries on the sexual and reproductive health (ASRH) education of adolescents in order to determine how their perceptions influence this education.This paper is a review of PubMed articles that examine Muslim peoples? views, perceptions, and attitudes towards ASRH education. The Socio-ecological framework was used for the data analysis to explore how peoples? perceptions on ASRH education are influenced and are interlinked between the concepts of the socio-ecological framework. The findings of the present study show that peoples? perception on ASRH education are varied and complex and they demonstrate an interplay between the five factors of socio-ecological framework  such as  Interpersonal factors (ASRH education stimulate premarital sex among adolescents), Intrapersonal factors (negative attitudes  from parents and healthcare providers), Institutional factors (school curriculum inadequately addressed  ASRH information), Cummunity factors (shame & embarrassment, and ASRH education would reduce religious modesty), and Policy factors (government poor performance on ASRH education).  The intrapersonal and community factors appear to have the most significant effects on Muslims perception in this education. These findings suggest that public health practitioners and stakeholders should design interventions that particularly target on the intrapersonal and community levels in order to implement a sustainable ASRH education program in these study areas.Key word: Adolescents, Muslim, sexual and reproductive health, education
