THE CUBA COMPANY AND EASTERN CUBA?S ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, 1900-1959

Juan Carlos Santamarina

Resumen

This artide evaluates the Cuba Company?s impact on eastern Cuban economic development. It argues that the Cuba Company?s railroads, together with its development plans and strategies, helped stimulate the extraordinary economic growth of eastern Cuba between 1900 and 1959, especially in the production of sugar. Sugar was king in Cuba before 1900 but only inwestern Cuba; eastern Cuba produced only a minuscule fraction of total Cuban sugar production. Moreover, the Cuban Independence War of 1895-1898 had destroyed the industry. Due to the Cuba Company?s strategy, however, by the 1920s Cuba was once again the largest producer of sugar in the world and eastern Cuba represented over 50% of total Cuban sugarproduction.
