Resumen

Die aanwending van X-strale en neutrone as nie-destruktiewe ondersoekinstrumente is ?n relatiewe skaars, maar wêreldwye aktiwiteit. Weens die diversiteit van hierdie tegnieke lok dit veelvuldige nasionale en internasionale gebruikers vanuit verskeie wetenskapsvelde. Dit skep ?n voordelige situasie vir multi-displinêre uitruiling van idees en geleentheid vir ?n breë spektrum van projekte vir algemene navorsing, maar spesifiek ook vir nagraadse studies. Laasgenoemde is belangrik in die lig daarvan dat een van die doelwitte van die Suid-Afrikaanse Nasionale Navorsings- en Tegnologie-infrastruktuurstrategie (Julie 2004) die ontwikkeling van hoëvlak opleiding by unieke navorsingsfasiliteite is. Die neutronfasiliteite van die Suid-Afrikaanse Kernenergie-korporasie (Necsa), wat deur die neutronbundellyne van die SAFARI-1 navorsingsreaktor bedien word, is voorbeelde van sulke unieke nasionale fasiliteite. Daarbenewens is daar by Necsa ook komplementêre X-straalfasiliteite sodat beide tegnieke gelyktydig tot die beskikking van navorsers binne die Nasionale Innovasiestelsel gestel kan word.
