Resumen

Chitosan (87.2% NH2) was employed as adsorbent for the orange 16 reactive dye in an aqueous medium. The dye is used in textile dyeing. Isotherms of adsorption were determined according to variations of pH and the initial concentration of the dye. Results of adsorption experiments were analyzed with Langmuir isotherm and indicated an increase of adsorption capacity with pH decrease. This effect is attributed to the increase of -NH3+ groups of the chitosan in acid medium, producing a strong interaction between the cationic group from the chitosan and -SO3- group of the dye. Values for qm were 1613 mg/g (pH 2.0) and 310 mg/g (pH 10.0).
