Effect of Firing Temperature on Recovery of Electronic Waste Sludge into Clay Bricks

Resumen

In the present study, the utilisation of electronic waste sludge into clay brick is tested. X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) analysis discovered the possibility to apply electronic sludge into clay brick due to the presence of its key ingredient. Firing production method of brick is applied to 4 samples represent a different sludge proportion. Results from the tests demonstrate the sludge proportion and firing temperature were two significant variables to determine the quality of brick. Increasing sludge proportion gave the results in increasing water absorption and brick shrinkage, but decreasing in compressive strength, and density. On the other hand, firing at a higher temperature at constant sludge proportion results in increasing of brick shrinkage and compressive strength, but decreasing of water absorption.  In colour aspect, dark colour associated with high firing temperature, low absorption values and high compressive strength values at the constant sludge proportion. However, for products made from different raw materials proportion, there is no direct relationship between strength and color or absorption and color [15]. After considering sludge proportion and firing temperature factor, the sample of 5% sludge addition at 1030oC is the best sample that satisfies the demand for engineering class designation (A or B) in water adsorption and compressive strength.
