ENVIRONMENTAL BURDEN RELATED TO THE PROCESS OF RE-MELTING LEAD FROM DISUSED BATTERIES

Ewa Kaminska

Resumen

According to statutory requirements, the enteprises processing lead-acid batteries are required to obtain the minimum recycling efficiencies of 65% with respect to the weight of disused batteries. Then, the lead contained in them should be subjected to the recycling process to the highest extent possible, while taking account of the existing technologies and relevant to them costs. This paper analyzes the process of recycling lead coming from used lead-acid batteries, recommended as the best available technique (BAT).The article presents results of the eco-balance analysis of the disused lead-acid batteries utilization process. The final product of the processes is refined lead. The analysis covered the year 2010 of the operation of the disused batteries processing plant. The results of the analysis are presented in environmental sections (Pt), reflecting the level of potential environmental burdens. Positive value indicates negative impact on the environment, negative ? environmental benefit. The analysis was performed using the SimaPro7.3.3 software. The life-cycle assessment was performed by Eco-indicator 99 method and the results are presented in eleven environmental sections, grouped in three categories of influence, i.e. human health, quality of the ecosystem and resources consumption.
