Resumen

Gdynia is a city in the Pomeranian Voivodeship of Poland with a population of about 250,000. It faces a growing motorization rate that needs to be addressed. Car ownership in Gdynia now exceeds 500 vehicles per 1000 residents. Travel by public transport is decreasing and the rate of walking and cycling remains low. It is necessary to reverse these negative trends by implementing solutions based on walking, cycling, and smart mobility. On the basis of one selected intersection, the article presents a research method which aims at finding solutions that should improve pedestrian walking and safety conditions at signalized intersections in the city center area. According to the statistical research of traffic incidents, pedestrian behavior, and simulations run using the VISSIM software, an attempt was made to find solutions that will result in improvement of traffic conditions and pedestrian safety at signalized intersections. These analyses do not exhaust the test issues but are only a prelude to further research that will be run, among others, within the FLOW Project framework (HORIZON 2020).
